Airlines demand proof of capacity before any Mumbai slot cuts

Airlines have asked Mumbai International Airport Ltd to provide detailed capacity data and refurbishment timelines before any reduction of flight slots is decided.

Airlines are pressing Mumbai International Airport Ltd for a clear picture of the airport’s current and future capacity as Terminal 1 undergoes refurbishment and traffic may need to be moved. They seek data on the two terminals, the refurbishment timeline, and the projected 5 MPPA capacity boost at Terminal 2 expected by next March before any slot reductions for the Summer 2027 transition are approved. The Airport Operators Committee reiterated that MIAL must comply with the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s May 2013 slot-allocation guidelines and IATA’s worldwide slot standards, warning against unilateral traffic reallocation.

The committee noted that Terminal 1 handles under 10 MPPA and no solid justification for slot cuts has been presented. MIAL’s chief airport officer has urged airlines to meet with its network-planning and commercial teams ahead of the stakeholder meeting on October 28. Airlines have expressed support for the Terminal 1 refurbishment, provided it proceeds without delay.
