Airstrike by Myanmar military kills 11 civilians in PDF-held Yesagyo area

A Myanmar military airstrike in PDF-controlled Yesagyo township killed 11 civilians, including women, children and a one-year-old, according to PDF member Bo Paw.

On Friday at approximately 2 pm (0730 GMT), a Myanmar military airstrike hit a roadside location in Yesagyo township, southwest of Mandalay, an area under the control of the People’s Defence Forces (PDF). The attack killed 11 civilians, among them six women, two children and a one-year-old who could only walk a little, PDF member Bo Paw said. A witness, who asked to remain anonymous for safety, said three houses were totally destroyed and an 11-year-old student riding a bicycle was killed on the spot.

The military has not provided comment. Conflict monitoring group ACLED estimates the civil war has caused more than 100,000 deaths since the 2021 coup. While PDF forces initially made gains, they are now losing ground around Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city.

Why it matters

The strike underscores the continuing civilian toll and the junta's use of air power in Myanmar's civil war.
