Alabama sees surge in specialty license plates honoring Dolly Parton after her death

Dolly Parton's death has sparked a wave of enthusiasm for a new Alabama specialty license plate that would support her Imagination Library program. Kaelyn Christian, the state's Imagination Library director, reported that pre-commitments rose from roughly 40 at the start of the week to over 550 within 24 hours, moving the effort past the halfway point toward the 1,000 plates required for launch. Each plate costs $50 annually, with the money earmarked for the program in the registrant's county, effectively creating a recurring donation.

The Imagination Library, founded in 1995, provides a free monthly book to children from birth until age five, and currently serves about 114,000 Alabama youngsters. Christian highlighted that a single plate could fund two children’s books each month for nearly two years, underscoring the plate's potential long-term impact on literacy in the state.
