Alaska voter list flags over 2,800 possible noncitizens, Republicans outnumber Democrats
Alaska's election officials released a list of more than 2,800 voters flagged as possible noncitizens, with 122 identified as Republicans and 100 as Democrats.
Following a new data-sharing effort with the Division of Motor Vehicles, Alaska's election officials compiled a list of 2,809 voters flagged as possible noncitizens, according to documents obtained through a public-records request. The majority, 2,502, are classified as "undeclared" voters, while the list records 122 Republicans, 100 Democrats, 3 Libertarians and 5 Greens. More than half of the names are tied to Anchorage, with additional entries from Fairbanks, Juneau, Kodiak, Unalaska and several rural communities.
Of those listed, 763 have cast ballots in state or federal elections, exposing them to potential prosecution unless citizenship is verified. The state has already indicted 11 Whittier residents for voting without citizenship, and over 600 people have contacted the division to contest their removal, while more than 100 claim they are not citizens.
Why it matters
The list could affect thousands of Alaskans' voting rights and raise legal challenges over the state's voter-purge process.
