Alba Iulia Court Orders Temporary Medical Internment for Prosecutor George Bucurică, Lifts Pre-trial Detention
The Alba Iulia Court of Appeal ordered provisional medical confinement for prosecutor Radu George Bucurică and revoked his preventive arrest.
On Monday, the Curtea de Apel Alba Iulia issued a provisional order to admit prosecutor Radu George Bucurică to a specialized medical unit, citing the need to eliminate the danger that justified his earlier preventive detention. The court simultaneously dismissed the prosecution’s request to prolong his arrest, a measure previously imposed by the Înalta Curte de Casație și Justiție. Prosecutors had filed two separate applications—one for continued detention and another for medical internment—because the two measures cannot be applied together.
The court accepted the internment request and rejected the arrest extension; the decisions remain subject to appeal within 48 hours for the arrest and five days for the medical order. Bucurică’s legal troubles stem from an August 10 incident in a Hunedoara bar, where he is accused of deploying a tear-gas spray and discharging a lethal firearm while immobilized. Earlier, the Alba Iulia Court had initially released him, but the Supreme Court reinstated a 30-day arrest starting August 27, and the CSM’s prosecutors’ section later suspended him from office.
