Albanese to launch Australia's 2029-30 UN Security Council bid at UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to address the UN General Assembly in September, marking his second year speaking at the forum, and will officially launch Australia's campaign for a non-permanent Security Council seat for the 2029-30 term. Foreign Minister Penny Wong argues that a seat would strengthen Australia's influence amid growing global uncertainty. Australia has previously served on the council five times, most recently in 2013-14 following the MH17 disaster, when then-foreign minister Julie Bishop led the response.

The current bid faces no immediate rival from the Western European and Others Group, but securing the seat still requires a two-thirds vote of the 193 member states. The announcement comes amid a busy summit season that includes COP, ASEAN, APEC and G20 meetings, underscoring the government's diplomatic priorities.
