Albanian Fugitive Known as “Master of Escapes” Apprehended in Tarragona
Spanish police captured Toma Taulant, the so-called “Master of Escapes,” after his fourth prison break, this time from an Italian maximum-security jail.
Spain’s National Police announced the capture of Toma Taulant, dubbed the “Master of Escapes,” in the northeastern city of Tarragona. The fugitive, wanted by Italy under a European arrest warrant, escaped from a maximum-security prison in Milan in December by cutting window bars and descending with knotted bedsheets. Earlier escapes included prisons in Terni and Parma, Italy, and a Belgian facility where he climbed the walls using a human pyramid.
During the arrest, Taulant resisted and an accomplice is said to have wounded two officers. He was found with forged identification documents and two €500 notes believed to be counterfeit, and a judge ordered his provisional custody pending extradition to Italy.
Why it matters
The arrest ends a series of high-profile prison breaks that raised security concerns across Europe.
