Albany Woman Charged with Plotting ISIS-Inspired Bomb Attack on State Capitol
The Justice Department said Jessica Bowie, 35, of Albany, was arrested for planning an ISIS-style bombing of the New York State Capitol.
Federal prosecutors announced that Jessica Bowie, a 35-year-old resident of Albany, faces charges for plotting an ISIS-inspired bombing of the New York State Capitol. According to Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg, Bowie intended to use an explosive device to kill public officials and raze the building before fleeing to territory in Syria controlled by the extremist group. She was detained after acquiring what she thought was a bomb and was observed taking photographs of the capitol grounds.
Investigators also noted her online activity praising the September 11 attacks and expressing anti-American views. Governor Kathy Hochul responded by saying the state is bolstering security at the capitol and other government facilities amid rising political violence. A spokesperson for Bowie was unavailable for comment.
