Albert Heijn disables multiple IT systems amid a cybersecurity incident

Albert Heijn and its sister chains have taken down numerous digital services after a cybersecurity incident, leaving price tags, websites and delivery unavailable.

A cybersecurity incident forced Albert Heijn to deactivate a wide range of its IT systems, causing electronic price displays to freeze and rendering the websites and apps of Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall inaccessible. Home-delivery services have been halted and several distribution centres have paused operations, though not all centres are affected. Margaret Versteden-van Duijn told one outlet that the duration of the outage is still unknown.

Prolonged downtime could first deplete fresh-food stocks and later reduce the range of non-perishable goods on shelves, with product availability differing between locations. Cyber-security firm Nedscaper’s Christo Butcher likened the response to a typical ransomware reaction, noting that extensive system shutdowns suggest the company has not pinpointed the attackers’ foothold. No details were given about potential data theft or the identity of the perpetrators.

Why it matters

The shutdown disrupts grocery shopping and could affect food availability for many consumers.
