Alberta chief urges government respect after missing Treaty 6 anniversary ceremony

Grand Chief Joey Pete criticized the provincial government for not sending Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney to the Treaty 6 150th-anniversary event in Edmonton.

A commemorative event for the 150th anniversary of Treaty 6 took place at Edmonton City Hall, featuring Indigenous leaders, Mayor Andrew Knack, Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani and federal minister Eleanor Olszewski. Grand Chief Joey Pete of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations highlighted that Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney did not attend, stating the minister was away and had not been able to join.

Pete argued the government's failure to be present sent a negative message about its commitment to Indigenous partners. He also warned that the pending Alberta separation referendum and plans for new pipelines remain major concerns that have not been discussed with First Nations. The provincial government’s office reiterated its dedication to maintaining strong relationships despite the minister’s absence. The ceremony launches a week-long series of events, including a reenactment of the original signing and upcoming gatherings at Fort Carlton in Saskatchewan.

Why it matters

It shows tension between Alberta's government and Indigenous groups over representation and upcoming policy debates.
