Alberta expands optometrists' scope to include minor surgeries and laser treatments
Starting Nov. 1, Alberta will permit qualified optometrists to perform select minor surgical and laser procedures after completing extra training.
From Nov. 1, Alberta will allow optometrists with additional certification to conduct limited surgical and laser procedures such as excising benign skin growths, treating styes and performing specific laser treatments. Candidates must finish extra coursework, pass examinations, gain clinical experience and obtain authorization from the Alberta College of Optometrists. The province’s health ministry confirmed that these procedures will continue to be covered by the public health system.
Advocates argue the move will shorten wait lists and lessen travel burdens for residents of rural communities, citing similar models in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Safety remains a priority, with strict oversight and standards in place. The policy positions Alberta as a national pioneer in expanding optometric practice.
Why it matters
The policy could improve eye-care access and reduce wait times for Albertans, especially in remote areas.
