Alberta's diplomatic strategy eases trade war pressure on its economy

Alberta's senior representative to the United States, Nathan Cooper, told one outlet that the province's emphasis on diplomacy, rather than retaliation, has helped shield its economy from the worst effects of U.S. tariffs. By remaining the only province without a ban or levy on American alcohol imports, Alberta has cultivated a positive response from U.S. officials, which Cooper says translates into concrete advantages. While the Canada-U.S. trade war continues, U.S. imports of Canadian oil keep rising, and Alberta's economic impact remains modest compared with other provinces.

The province's strategy diverges from Ontario Premier Doug Ford's aggressive messaging and from former Alberta premier Jason Kenney's suggestion of an oil export tax. Although some critics argue Alberta is not fully part of a coordinated “Team Canada” response, analysts and communications advisors see the diplomatic route as yielding better results for Alberta's interests.
