Alberta sets new rules limiting school flag displays to national and provincial symbols
Alberta's education ministry issued regulations that restrict flags on school grounds to the Canadian and Alberta flags, with limited exceptions.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides released new regulations aimed at removing ideology from Alberta classrooms, mandating that only the Canadian and Alberta flags may be displayed permanently on school property. School boards are barred from issuing statements on political or social issues and must maintain a neutral learning environment. Exceptions require a written request to the Ministry of Education and Childcare and must satisfy criteria like relevance to a school event, community representation, or alignment with existing infrastructure.
Additional permissible flags include sports team banners, the Vatican flag, municipal flags, and symbols defined under the Emblems of Alberta Act. Treaty and foreign national flags may appear for up to 14 consecutive days when linked to curriculum or ceremonial occasions, such as National Indigenous Peoples Day. Critics, including Alberta NDP education critic Amanda Chapman, argue the government should prioritize overcrowding over flag policing. The rules take effect on Jan. 4, 2027.
