Alberta UCP MLA Shane Getson Resigns Ahead of Fall Session
Shane Getson, a two-term United Conservative backbencher from Lac. Ste. Anne-Parkland, announced his immediate departure from the Alberta legislature citing personal and family reasons.
Shane Getson, who has represented the largely rural riding of Lac. Ste. Anne-Parkland since 2019, issued a statement saying personal and family considerations force him to step down immediately.
He explained that providing less than full attention would short-change both his constituents and his household. Although never a cabinet minister, Getson once acted as the United Conservative caucus whip and frequently made headlines for provocative comments, including a 2025 comparison of transgender surgery to livestock castration. He also spoke publicly about overcoming childhood abuse through faith, sport, and hard work. The resignation occurs on the eve of the legislature’s upcoming fall session.
Why it matters
The departure removes a controversial voice from Alberta's legislature just before a new session begins.
