Alberta voters head to the polls for historic 10-question referendum

Alberta holds a province-wide referendum on Oct. 19, featuring ten questions—including a new vote on separating from Canada—under Premier Danielle Smith’s agenda.

Alberta’s Oct. 19 referendum presents voters with ten distinct questions, the latest addition being a binding second vote on provincial separation from Canada, announced by Premier Danielle Smith in May. Over 1,400 polling stations across the province will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and anyone still in line at closing time may remain to vote. Ballots are colour-coded and counted manually, with the separation question tallied first and early results expected after polls close, followed by the remaining nine questions by Wednesday.

Elections Alberta forecasts an unprecedented turnout of 80-85 percent of its nearly three-million electorate. The province’s election officials have outlined ID requirements and mandated paid voting time for employees, while media outlets will provide live coverage and analysis throughout the night.

Why it matters

The referendum could reshape Alberta’s relationship with Canada and influence national constitutional debates.
