Alberta’s final two months of referendum campaign see stay and leave groups ramp up mobilization
With 60 days left, pro-stay and pro-separation groups in Alberta are focusing on turning out supporters rather than persuading undecided voters.
Alberta’s upcoming referendum, which includes a question on whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second binding separation vote, enters its final 60 days. Long-term polling by Janet Brown shows separatist support lagging behind stay sentiment, with only five to eight percent of voters still undecided. In response, the major campaign groups are moving from persuasion to voter mobilisation.
Let Alberta Decide, the top third-party advertiser with over $415,000 in donations, is organizing a rally on Oct. 17 at the Legislature and arranging minibuses for rural voters. Forever Canadian reports a network of volunteers in every municipality and will continue distributing lawn signs while planning additional rallies. The Alberta Prosperity Project plans town halls and a rally on Aug. 29, urging supporters to enlist friends for the polls.
Alberta’s Voice, which has raised more than $87,000, aims to launch a radio “air war” and train 100,000 volunteers through a captain system, targeting the small pool of undecided voters. Elections Alberta will accept special ballot packages until 5 p.m. on Oct. 16, heightening the focus on turnout.
