Alex Ovechkin Announces Retirement at End of 2026-27 Season

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin said he will hang up his skates after the 2026-27 NHL campaign, his 22nd year in the league.

Alex Ovechkin informed the Washington Capitals locker room on Monday that he will retire after the 2026-27 NHL season, marking the end of a 22-year career. The announcement, made 21 years to the day after his debut, was framed as a family decision reached during the summer. Ovechkin, who holds the league’s career goal record with 929 regular-season goals, praised one outlet roster and urged teammates to savor the final 82 games and aim for the playoffs.

He recalled leading the Capitals to their sole Stanley Cup in 2017-18 and noted that, should the team qualify, he could climb into the top-10 for playoff goals. The veteran also addressed past scrutiny over his support for Russian president Vladimir Putin, emphasizing his desire for peace and distancing himself from politics. He concluded by expressing excitement for the upcoming season and gratitude toward fans and family.

Why it matters

Ovechkin’s retirement ends an era for the NHL and will reshape the Capitals’ future plans.
