Alexander Zverev poised to claim ATP world No. 1 after rivals stumble in Shanghai

Alexander Zverev is on track to become the ATP world number one following early exits by Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton at the Shanghai tournament.

Early-round defeats for Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton at the ATP event in Shanghai have removed the main obstacles to Alexander Zverev reaching the world number one ranking. Alcaraz lost to Belgian Zizou Bergs, while Shelton was eliminated by Frenchman Arthur Géa. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner, who currently leads the rankings, announced the end of his season because of persistent knee issues, leaving his points vulnerable.

Zverev, a recent French Open and US Open champion, can claim the top spot by winning the Shanghai Masters or advancing to at least the semifinals in Vienna later this month. Additional strong performances at the Paris Masters and the year-end ATP Finals in Turin would further cement his position. The upcoming Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia does not award ranking points.

Why it matters

Zverev’s ascent to world No. 1 reshapes the ATP hierarchy and impacts upcoming tournament seedings.
