Alexandre Pato-led consortium clears regulatory hurdle for Northampton Town investment

A consortium that includes former Brazil striker Alexandre Pato has received approval from the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League to acquire a shareholding in League Two side Northampton Town.

Northampton Town announced that a consortium featuring former AC Milan and Chelsea forward Alexandre Pato has secured regulatory clearance to purchase a shareholding in the club. The approval came from both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League after a detailed review of the investment’s structure, financial sustainability and the investors’ backgrounds. Sports Alpha Capital, which previously explored a takeover of Colchester United, and London-based Gemcorp Capital are named as the primary backers, though the exact percentage of ownership remains undisclosed.

Chairman Kelvin Thomas said the process demonstrated thorough scrutiny and expressed confidence that the group’s blend of football, corporate and financial expertise will benefit the Cobblers, adding a touch of Brazilian flair. The club, still struggling after a recent relegation and a pre-tax loss of nearly £3 million, aims to use the capital to become debt-free and strengthen its squad, which already includes new manager Chris Hogg and striker Matty Warhurst.

Why it matters

The approved investment could stabilize Northampton Town's finances and shape its future after a difficult season.
