Aliança Catalana backs Vox in bid to block reprimand over Companys comment

In the Catalan Parliament’s spokespersons’ board, Vox presented two petitions to review disciplinary actions taken against its deputy Joan Garriga, including the charge that he labeled former president Lluís Companys a murderer during a tribute to the executed leader. Aliança Catalana aligned with Vox, casting votes that, together with the PP, fell short of overturning the sanction. The parliamentary commission on deputies’ statutes had found Garriga in breach of the code of conduct, and the plenary board subsequently imposed a verbal reprimand to be read at the start of a session.

Representatives from Vox clarified that their appeal focused on the passage concerning Companys. Aliança Catalana has previously cooperated with Vox on similar votes, sharing a stance against parliamentary penalties aimed at curbing hate speech. The party has not yet explained its reasoning for the vote.
