Alibaba's Qwen AI suite surpasses Meta and Google with over 3 billion downloads

Alibaba Group Holding reports that its open-weight Qwen AI model family has achieved more than 3 billion downloads worldwide in the last six months, eclipsing the download counts of Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet’s Google. Hugging Face’s August 14 report lists Google with 418 million and Meta with 227 million downloads for 2026. Alibaba has open-sourced over 460 models, spawning more than 300,000 derivative versions, and positions Qwen as a core component of developers’ fine-tuning workflows.

The surge reflects a broader trend of Chinese AI firms, including Moonshot AI Inc. and DeepSeek, closing the gap with closed U.S. models such as those from OpenAI Inc. and Anthropic PBC. Export controls on chips and AI systems have not halted Chinese competition, and Alibaba’s cloud platform is extending Qwen to enterprise customers across Southeast Asia and Africa. In response, Meta and Nvidia have recently launched new open-source models to retain developer interest.
