All ten Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha nominees poised for unopposed election

Ten candidates - eight from the BJP and two from the Samajwadi Party - are expected to be elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh without opposition after the SP withdrew its third nominee.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Rajya Sabha election is set to conclude with ten candidates elected unopposed after the Samajwadi Party decided against fielding a third nominee on the final nomination day. This move guarantees eight seats for the BJP and two for the SP, each backed by a sizable vote count. The formal declaration will follow the completion of the nomination scrutiny and withdrawal process on Oct 9, assuming no candidate steps back.

The BJP’s eight nominees - Dharampal Singh, Prakash Pal, Shruti Gangwar, Vidya Sagar Sonkar, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Radha Kant Ojha, Gopi Krishna Pandey and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan - filed their papers amid a celebratory gathering at the party headquarters, with chief minister Yogi Adityanath, deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, and state BJP chief Pankaj Chaudhary in attendance. The SP’s two candidates, party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, will also be declared elected. Observers note that the lack of a contest underscores the BJP’s dominance in the state assembly and allows the SP to conserve resources for the 2027 assembly elections.

Why it matters

The unopposed outcome highlights the BJP's strong position in Uttar Pradesh ahead of crucial state elections.
