Allahabad High Court denies bail to Mohammad Umar in extortion case
The Allahabad High Court turned down Mohammad Umar's bail request in a case alleging extortion and threats, keeping him in Lucknow jail.
In a recent ruling, the Allahabad High Court refused to grant bail to Mohammad Umar, the oldest son of the late Atiq Ahmed, who was both a gangster and a politician. Justice Avnish Saxena dismissed the application after an FIR lodged on April 26, 2023 alleged that Umar demanded Rs 20 lakh from Mohd Muslim and issued threats of kidnapping, assault and possible death. The case also names Ali Ahmad, Asad Kalia, Mohd Nasrat and two others as co-accused.
Umar is currently held in Lucknow jail, having earlier received parole along with his brother Ali to attend the burial of their youngest brother Abaan, who died in a road accident near Jhansi. The family's recent tragedies include the 2023 killing of brother Asad Ahmed and the 2023 shooting of father Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. Both Umar and Ali remain in separate Uttar Pradesh prisons.
