Alliance MP calls stalled IVF funding in Northern Ireland a disgrace ahead of debate
Alliance MP Sorcha Eastwood criticised the lack of progress on IVF reform in Northern Ireland as she prepares for a Commons debate on baby loss.
Alliance MP Sorcha Eastwood recounted her own struggle with IVF after her husband Dale was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, noting that she and her husband were placed on a waiting list and only received one unsuccessful cycle under one outlet NHS rule in Northern Ireland. She contrasted this with the three funded cycles offered in Great Britain and pointed out that the 2020 New Decade, New Approach agreement pledged to extend funding but has yet to be implemented.
Eastwood described the situation as "an absolute disgrace" and called on legislators from all parties to back a campaign for more generous IVF provision and to review the use of BMI thresholds. Her remarks precede a Commons debate on Baby Loss Awareness, which will also feature former Conservative Health Secretary Sir Jeremy Hunt. The Department of Health said it remains supportive of the commitment but cited the need for additional investment and capacity before a timeline can be set.
Why it matters
It highlights ongoing health-policy gaps in Northern Ireland and the personal impact of limited IVF funding on families.
