Allianz eyes £5 billion bid for UK breakdown firm AA

German insurer Allianz is reportedly in talks to acquire the AA in a deal valued around £5 billion, with private-equity firm EQT also listed as a potential buyer.

Allianz, the multinational financial services group based in Germany, is said to be negotiating a takeover of the AA, the British roadside-assistance company, for roughly £5 billion. The insurer joins a short list that includes private-equity house EQT. The AA, founded in 1905 and famous for its yellow recovery vans, has been exploring options this year, weighing a sale against a possible London Stock Exchange listing. Its current owners, TowerBrook and Warburg Pincus, bought the firm out in 2020 after it had been public since 2014. Both investment firms declined to comment on the latest talks.

Why it matters

A £5 billion takeover could reshape the UK roadside-assistance market and affect investors in both the UK and Germany.
