Altnagelvin A&E upgrade stalled as budget impasse fuels patient outrage

Upgrades to Altnagelvin Hospital’s Emergency Department have been put on hold because the Executive budget remains unresolved, prompting residents to describe chaotic, overcrowded conditions.

Altnagelvin Hospital’s Emergency Department, built for 40,000 patients a year, is currently seeing about 80,000, creating extreme overcrowding and lengthy waiting times. Health Minister Robbie Butler confirmed the concerns and expressed regret that the Executive budget deadlock prevents funding for a modern replacement, leaving the project without a timeline. Residents described the department as a “war zone,” with patients forced to stand or sit on the floor, share one toilet, and endure days on hard plastic chairs amid noise and poor hygiene.

Several local MLAs, including Stewart Dickson, Pádraig Delargy, and Colin McGrath, criticized the lack of progress and called for immediate investment, while the Western Trust reiterated that a new ED remains its top capital priority. The stalemate highlights broader regional disparities in health funding across Northern Ireland.

Why it matters

The funding impasse leaves thousands of patients facing unsafe, undignified emergency care in a heavily over-burdened hospital.
