Amateur astronomers and ex-NASA engineer link mysterious night lights to satellite reflections

A Queensland astronomy group, aided by retired NASA engineer Philip Giacalone, says the colorful orbs seen near Venus are likely satellite flares.

Night-time observers across Queensland have been spotting luminous, swirling orbs near the western horizon around 8 p.m., prompting online debate about their source. Graham Moyle and members of a Central Queensland astronomy group examined the reports and, after consulting retired NASA aerospace engineer Philip Giacalone, identified the lights as satellite flares caused by sunlight reflecting off satellites in low-Earth orbit.

Giacalone built a free tool to predict such flares worldwide, warning that the surge to about 4,000 launches per year will likely produce more confusion. University of Queensland astrophysicist Jonti Horner highlighted that the total number of active satellites has more than tripled since 2020, with roughly 10,000 belonging to SpaceX’s Starlink constellation. While the Australian Space Agency stressed ongoing reforms for debris mitigation, some locals, including Lisa Manteit, argue the observed motions do not always follow straight satellite trajectories. The discussion underscores growing challenges as space traffic intensifies and public sightings become more common.
