Amateur Bodybuilder Mateusz Chmura Dies After Collapsing Onstage at British Finals

Mateusz Chmura, 33, collapsed while competing at the PCA British Finals in Shropshire and was later confirmed dead, leaving his newly-married wife Patrycja in mourning.

Mateusz Chmura, a 33-year-old amateur bodybuilder from Wakefield, suffered a collapse during the Classic Bodybuilding Medium division at the PCA British Finals held at the Telford International Centre in Shropshire. Emergency responders, including the Midlands Air Ambulance, attended the scene and transported him to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The competition was temporarily halted but continued after officials met with the remaining athletes.

The PCA expressed its deepest sympathies to Chmura’s wife Patrycja, his family, friends and the bodybuilding community. Patrycja, who married Chmura in August, posted a message thanking well-wishers and urging the public not to donate to a fraudulent fundraiser that claimed to support the family. The tragedy follows the recent death of professional bodybuilder Marianne von Gierke, whose cause of death also remains undisclosed.

Why it matters

The incident highlights the health risks athletes may face during competition and the need for reliable support for grieving families.
