Amazon aims to roll out Prime Air drones to almost 500 U.S. locales by 2026
Amazon announced that its Prime Air drone service will expand to serve roughly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, offering eligible orders in as little as 30 minutes.
Amazon is set to broaden its Prime Air drone delivery program to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the close of 2026, extending coverage far beyond the eleven locations it operates today. Each launch site can serve an area of about 175 square miles, allowing a single hub to reach multiple nearby municipalities. Shoppers whose addresses fall within the service zone will be presented with a drone-delivery choice at checkout, with Prime members enjoying free delivery on orders of $50 or more and a $2.99 fee on smaller purchases; non-Prime customers pay $4.99.
The drones can transport items up to five pounds, which Amazon says includes more than 60 % of its most frequently bought products, and typically deliver within an hour, though a 30-minute window is advertised. Safety is overseen through FAA Part 135 certification and a real-time detect-and-avoid system, while privacy is protected by processing camera data onboard without live monitoring. As competitors such as Walmart’s Wing and DoorDash also pursue drone logistics, Amazon’s rollout will test consumer acceptance and neighborhood tolerance for low-altitude aircraft.
