Amazon launches electric cargo bike fleet in Culver City to ease traffic

Amazon began operating more than 25 electric cargo bicycles in Culver City, each delivering around 240 packages per shift to reduce street congestion.

Amazon has deployed a fleet of more than 25 electric cargo bicycles in Culver City, commencing deliveries on Wednesday. Each bike can move about 240 packages during a shift, requiring only one refill stop, and operates at speeds up to 12 mph. Equipped with rear-facing cameras, regenerative braking and automatic parking brakes, the compact vehicles can travel in bike lanes, reducing reliance on larger delivery trucks.

Samantha Ciccone-Strumph, senior manager of strategic programs, said the bikes lower congestion, noise and emissions, and allow partners to hire riders without driver’s licenses. Delivery personnel undergo extensive training, including an in-person road course and two weeks on condensed routes. The initiative builds on similar deployments in more than 50 European cities and precedes a planned rollout in Burbank, aligning with Amazon’s Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040.

Why it matters

Switching to electric cargo bikes may cut urban traffic, noise and emissions while reshaping delivery employment.
