Amazon partners with X-energy and AEP to fund 960-MW nuclear plant in Indiana

Amazon has agreed to finance a new nuclear facility with X-energy and American Electric Power in Fairbanks, Indiana, targeting up to 960 MW of carbon-free power for the grid and its data centers.

Amazon has signed a deal with X-energy and American Electric Power to fund a nuclear power project on the former Breed Generating Station site in Fairbanks, Sullivan County, Indiana. The plan calls for up to twelve Xe-100 small modular reactors, each capable of delivering a total of 960 MW of carbon-free electricity to the regional grid and Amazon’s data centers. While the company estimates the venture could create roughly 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent roles, it has not disclosed a construction or operation schedule.

The Xe-100 design can be cooled by air, water, or a hybrid system, which Amazon says makes it suitable for regions with limited water resources. This marks the second collaboration between Amazon and X-energy, aiming to bring more than 5 GW of new nuclear capacity online in the United States by 2039. Earlier, Amazon previewed a similar project in Washington, the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility, also slated to build twelve reactors with construction expected later this decade. The move aligns with a trend among major tech companies, including Meta, Microsoft and Google, to explore nuclear options for powering data centers and AI workloads.
