Amazon plans $8 billion Nvidia chip sale to investors via special vehicle
Amazon is arranging to transfer roughly $8 billion worth of Nvidia Grace Blackwell AI chips to a new investment vehicle and will lease them back to reduce its balance-sheet load.
Amazon is seeking to offload about $8 billion of advanced Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips by placing them in a dedicated investment vehicle. The chips, which are deployed across over a dozen data centres in five U.S. states, including Nevada and Virginia, would be financed through debt issued by the vehicle, while Amazon would lease the hardware back for continued operation. In addition, Amazon may sell up to a 10 percent equity interest in the SPV to outside investors, further lightening its balance sheet.
The move reflects a strategy to transform expensive semiconductor assets into liquid capital without relinquishing computing capacity. Discussions with investors are reportedly underway, though neither Amazon nor Nvidia has commented at the time of reporting.
Why it matters
The deal could free billions of dollars for Amazon while reshaping how tech firms finance costly AI hardware.
