Amazon pledges 30,000 new jobs for UK youth by 2030

Amazon announced a plan to create 30,000 jobs for people aged 16 to 24 across the UK, including 10,000 work-experience positions in areas with few opportunities.

Amazon disclosed a commitment to generate 30,000 jobs for UK youths aged 16 to 24 by the end of the decade, targeting locations with limited employment prospects. Within this plan, 10,000 roles will be work-experience placements designed to help those without a CV or prior experience. The move comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham warned of an "economic catastrophe and moral failure" linked to the rising number of NEETs, which now total nearly one million.

Pat McFadden, the Work and Pensions Secretary, praised the partnership, saying it aligns with the government’s mission to boost employment nationwide. Amazon’s youth promise also includes support before, during, and after applications, aiming to provide good pay, mentorship and clear career pathways. The announcement coincides with the launch of the TechFirst programme, which seeks to give secondary-school students access to tech-sector opportunities. Major tech firms such as Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Arm and Kainos have already pledged backing for the broader youth guarantee.

Why it matters

The plan could significantly reduce youth unemployment in the UK and boost skills in growing tech sectors.
