Amazon reaches out to former staff for AI and finance roles amid talent war
Amazon is contacting eligible ex-employees, including those laid off, to fill openings in its cloud, AI and finance divisions.
Amazon is actively soliciting applications from former employees, including those affected by its recent layoffs, for roles in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and finance. One email from the AI agent organization, overseen by AWS vice president Swami Sivasubramanian, invited past AI and machine-learning staff to explore new opportunities under a "Boomerang Reengagement Initiative." Another recruiter in AWS finance offered a streamlined interview process and queried whether the company’s return-to-office policy had prompted the employee’s exit.
The company’s spokesperson confirmed that boomerang hiring is a routine, company-wide practice and that the in-office mandate has not changed. Amazon’s effort reflects its broader push to secure AI talent against competitors such as Google, OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic. Industry data show that rehiring former workers has risen, with boomerang hires comprising a growing share of new hires in the tech sector. The outreach also seeks to tailor future recruitment based on candidates’ remote-work preferences.
Why it matters
Rehiring laid-off staff helps Amazon quickly fill critical AI and finance roles in a competitive talent market.
