Amazon's drone delivery trial in Hazel Park faces mixed local reaction

Amazon is operating a pilot drone-delivery program in Hazel Park, Michigan, dispatching dozens of parcels daily, but some residents are uneasy about the service.

Hazel Park, a quiet Detroit suburb, was selected by Amazon as a pioneer location for its drone-delivery experiment in the United States. About a year after launch, the company operates 13 refrigerator-sized drones that buzz through the grey October sky at altitudes of 70 to 120 metres, resembling a swarm of bees. The drones can travel up to 12 kilometres from the warehouse and deliver parcels weighing no more than 2.3 kg, limiting shipments to small goods like sunscreen, medicines and essential electronics.

While the service now handles roughly 30 to 50 orders each day, many local homeowners have voiced discomfort with the noise and presence of the machines overhead. The trial highlights both the logistical potential of rapid aerial delivery and the community pushback it can generate.

Why it matters

The rollout shows how fast delivery tech can reshape local logistics while raising neighborhood acceptance issues.
