Amazon's New 'Carrie' Series Turns Classic Horror Into a Cyberbullying Thriller

Mike Flanagan's eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie streams on Prime Video, updating the 1970s tale with modern cyber-bullying and social-media horror.

Mike Flanagan's debut Amazon series reimagines Stephen King's 1974 novel Carrie, delivering eight episodes that blend classic horror with contemporary digital torment. Carrie White, played by Summer H. Howell, is forced into high school after her father's death and quickly becomes the victim of a viral Instagram account that amplifies her humiliation and fuels rumors throughout the school. The series also deepens the roles of her mother Margaret, a conspiracy-theorist turned parents-rights activist, and bully Christine Hargensen, portrayed by Alison Thornton, giving them more sympathetic backstories.

Flanagan, known for previous King adaptations and Netflix horror hits, uses the story to explore the pervasive impact of cyber-bullying beyond school walls. The cast, including Matthew Lillard and Amber Midthunder, brings depth to characters that were once one-dimensional. A brief nod to the wider King universe, however, feels forced and detracts from Carrie's agency in the climax. All episodes become available on Prime Video on October 7.
