Amazon to hire 300,000 seasonal workers and launch same-day health coverage
Amazon plans to add 300,000 seasonal employees for the holiday period and will provide health insurance from day one for workers scheduled at least 30 hours weekly.
Amazon is set to expand its seasonal labor force by 20%, seeking to employ 300,000 workers for the upcoming holiday surge, the largest temporary hiring effort in its history. The recruitment will cover both fulfillment centers and transportation networks throughout the United States. Beginning on January 1, the company will extend health insurance to all hourly employees—full-time, part-time and seasonal—who are scheduled for at least 30 hours a week, with coverage effective from the first day of work.
The health plans are priced at $5 per one outlet and include $5 copayments. Amazon reports that seasonal hires typically earn more than $20 per hour, while the average pay for regular full- and part-time staff is close to $24 per hour. The firm also notes that many seasonal workers secure longer-term positions after their initial stint.
Why it matters
The hiring surge and new health benefits affect hundreds of thousands of workers and set a benchmark for seasonal employment standards.
