Amazon trims under 1,000 roles across stores, support and engineering units
Amazon disclosed a new wave of layoffs affecting fewer than 1,000 employees in its stores, customer-service, marketplace-support and retail-engineering teams.
Employees on an internal Slack channel reported receiving emails that their positions were being eliminated, prompting a flood of queries about severance, access to internal job boards and whether further notices were pending. The reductions touch multiple divisions—customer service, marketplace support and engineering roles within Amazon’s retail segment—as well as sites in India and the United Kingdom, affecting fewer than 1,000 workers overall.
This move comes after Amazon cut about 30,000 jobs late last year and early this year to streamline costs, even as it readies a historic $220 billion spend on data centers, chips and other AI infrastructure. A spokesperson confirmed that the layoffs were confined mainly to the Stores business and reiterated the company’s commitment to help displaced employees transition. Staff in the Slack channel also raised concerns about medical leave, continued access to corporate tools, and the possibility of additional cuts in regions such as Mexico and other parts of Europe.
Why it matters
The layoffs show Amazon’s ongoing workforce reshaping amid massive AI investment, affecting job security for hundreds of staff.
