Amazon Web Services gains NATO Restricted cloud accreditation across all member nations

Amazon Web Services has become the first cloud provider authorized to handle NATO Restricted information for every NATO member.

Amazon Web Services achieved the inaugural NATO Restricted accreditation, enabling the company to host classified NATO data across the entire alliance. The approval required alignment with NATO D32 technical standards, which define security requirements for handling such information in public cloud environments. Spain's National Cryptographic Center conducted the assessment, and NATO subsequently validated the results.

The credential is expected to create a consistent, vetted security base for all member nations, potentially reducing the time and expense of individual compliance processes. It may also accelerate national approvals for AWS services. AWS highlighted that the accreditation expands options for NATO members and defense bodies to adopt commercial cloud solutions that meet their security needs.

Why it matters

It lets NATO countries use a common, vetted commercial cloud, simplifying security compliance and cutting costs.
