America must turn to trade-school models to staff its AI infrastructure boom

Tech giants are racing to build AI data centers, but a shortage of electricians, welders and other skilled tradespeople threatens progress.

The rapid expansion of artificial-intelligence data centers by firms like Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon is confronting a critical shortage of construction and technical tradespeople. Projections suggest the United States will require roughly 140,000 more electricians, HVAC technicians, welders and similar workers by 2030 to sustain AI infrastructure growth. Switzerland’s long-standing vocational apprenticeship model, which enrolls about 70% of each age cohort, demonstrates how coordinated on-the-job training can supply a steady pipeline of skilled labor.

The system allows apprentices to earn while they learn and later pursue university degrees, offering firms a reliable talent source with reported internal returns of 7%-10%. Inspired by this approach, Colorado’s CareerWise program and emerging initiatives in other states aim to replicate the apprenticeship framework for advanced manufacturing and tech sectors.
