American arrested for Myanmar arms training pays fine and seeks case dismissal

American Matthew Aaron VanDyke, who was arrested in March on accusations of training ethnic armed factions in Myanmar, has paid a ₹5.5 lakh compounding fine to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Delhi. His lawyers, Rohit Gour and Rohit Dandriyal, intend to move the court for a discharge from the immigration-related charges. The National Investigation Agency filed a charge sheet under the Immigration and Foreigners Act sections 21 and 23, describing the charges as “piecemeal” compared with the more serious Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act provisions.
VanDyke remains under bail conditions that restrict travel outside Delhi. The case also involves six Ukrainian nationals arrested at Indian airports, who were alleged to have crossed into Myanmar without permits to conduct drone and jamming training for insurgent groups linked to Indian militancy.
