American Express lifts full-year profit outlook after strong third-quarter results
American Express raised its 2026 earnings forecast after reporting a 9% jump in Q3 revenue, driven by higher card spending and fees.
American Express announced a 9% rise in third-quarter revenue to $20.1 billion, supported by greater cardholder usage and fee income. Net income reached $3.7 billion, and adjusted earnings per share rose 13% to $4.68, leading the firm to raise its 2026 full-year EPS outlook to $18.30-$18.60, above the prior $17.30-$17.90 range. Revenue growth was fueled by affluent customers spending on travel, dining and shopping, as well as higher net interest income from larger balances.
Credit-loss provisions dropped to $1.0 billion, reflecting a reserve release, and the effective tax rate fell to 18.1% after tax benefits. CEO Stephen Squeri highlighted solid billings, new customer acquisition, and strong credit quality as key drivers.
