Americans overwhelmingly back public disclosure of healthcare prices
A new poll shows that most U.S. voters consider it important for hospitals and providers to reveal prices before care is given.
The Voters Voice Poll surveyed 2,533 registered Americans via an online panel and text messages, revealing that 88% consider public price disclosure for healthcare at least somewhat important. Respondents included equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, plus a sizable independent cohort, of which 330 were true independents. Seniors and college-educated voters expressed the strongest support, with about 91% of those 65 and older favoring transparency.
Black voters, though still largely supportive, showed the lowest level of enthusiasm among demographic groups. The poll follows Senate action on the Patients Deserve Price Tags Act, which would require hospitals and insurers to publish negotiated rates and cash prices for various services.
Why it matters
Public price transparency could give patients clearer cost expectations and pressure providers to lower fees.
