Amit Shah says ending Naxalism must be paired with rebuilding Bastar

Union Minister Amit Shah announced new disability aid and development projects for tribal communities in Bastar, stressing that eradicating Naxalism alone is insufficient.

Amit Shah, a senior leader of the BJP, used a Jagdalpur event to outline the government's plan to rehabilitate victims of Left-Wing Extremism in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region. The disability assistance programme, held from October 5-7, has already served more than 3,600 disabled individuals, providing artificial limbs, wheelchairs, tricycles, hearing aids and walking sticks. In total, 7,882 people received incentive payments, 455 secured jobs and 129 were allotted land.

Shah announced that former security camps will be converted into community service centres to address health, education and livelihood needs. He also pointed to state-led efforts such as the Bastar Olympics, which promote sports in formerly conflict-ridden areas, the Bastar Pandum cultural revival project, and the Niyad Nellanar scheme to improve basic facilities in remote villages. The minister emphasized that eliminating Naxalism must be accompanied by comprehensive reconstruction to make Bastar a peaceful and prosperous region.

Why it matters

The plan links security successes with long-term support for tribal communities, aiming to prevent a resurgence of insurgency.
