Amnesty and ACLU say U.S. campuses suppress pro-Palestine speech since Oct. 7

Amnesty International USA and the American Civil Liberties Union published findings from a two-year investigation of 80 colleges and universities across 28 states and Washington, D.C. The analysis concludes that many schools have adopted sweeping limits on student speech, initiated disciplinary actions and handed out severe penalties, including expulsions and suspensions, to those expressing anti-Israel views. The report further alleges that the Trump administration has conducted a widespread, McCarthy-style effort to silence pro-Palestine supporters on campuses and to retaliate against institutions hosting such activism.
By linking campus policies to federal pressure, the groups argue that higher education faces long-term damage to free expression. The study calls for greater protection of student activism and warns of the broader implications for academic freedom.
