Amnesty warns Gaza recovery hinges on enforcing international law and accountability
Amnesty International said the future of Gaza cannot be separated from a justice framework and urged compliance with International Court of Justice orders.
Amnesty International issued a statement linking Gaza’s reconstruction to a robust framework grounded in international law, justice and victims' rights. It noted that over 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire, almost two million people still lack shelter, and none of the hospitals are functioning fully, while 1.4 million face crisis-level hunger. The organization criticized the ongoing failure to hold Israel accountable and to enforce the International Court of Justice’s binding orders, saying this fuels mass-scale atrocity crimes.
Amnesty urged the international community to press Israel to comply with the court’s decisions as a prerequisite for any lasting recovery. The statement underscores that accountability cannot be ignored in the region’s humanitarian response.
Why it matters
The appeal highlights how legal accountability is essential for delivering aid and rebuilding Gaza after extensive civilian suffering.
