Analyst claims Trump’s Iran conflict has left the U.S. strategically weakened

Foreign-policy commentator David Rothkopf argues that President Donald Trump’s war with Iran has created severe weapon shortages, low troop morale and diminished U.S. leverage.

During a recent Daily Beast Podcast episode, senior global-affairs columnist David Rothkopf criticized President Donald Trump for initiating a war with Iran that, according to him, has resulted in weapon shortages and a decline in morale among U.S. troops. He referenced reports of worsening conditions aboard the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which has remained on station far longer than planned. Rothkopf accused the administration of allocating defense funds to projects that serve the president’s image rather than to soldiers, veterans or basic military needs.

He added that Iranian leaders are taking advantage of the United States’ lack of leverage, and suggested that any move to increase ground forces would be politically disastrous for Republicans. When asked for comment, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed Rothkopf’s remarks as partisan attacks.

Why it matters

The analysis highlights how the Iran war may be eroding U.S. military readiness and political support ahead of elections.
