Analysts across the mobile sector agree that demand for phones equipped with foldable screens is set to become more visible, even though prices have not dropped and the devices remain niche. The two dominant global manufacturers are introducing fresh models that differ modestly in size and shape from previous releases. The concept originated with Royole's 2018 prototype, a device that later went bankrupt, and was quickly followed by Huawei and Samsung offering similar designs.
During the pandemic years, foldable phones were treated more as technological showcases than practical tools, with marketing emphasizing the novelty factor. They have also taken on a role as status symbols, appearing in the hands of both affluent and less-wealthy users eager to signal ownership of cutting-edge tech. However, many consumers still question the added value beyond media consumption and large-screen experiences.
