Ancient 80,000-year-old micro-arrowheads from Uzbekistan challenge Homo sapiens migration models
Archaeologists have uncovered tiny projectile points dated to 80,000 years ago at Uzbekistan’s Obi-Rakhmat site, suggesting early arrow-like technology far earlier than previously thought.
Researchers examining the oldest layers of the Obi-Rakhmat rock shelter in Uzbekistan have identified unretouched triangular microlithic points that display impact marks consistent with use as arrowheads. Dating to about 80,000 years ago, these points are comparable in size and manufacture to those recovered from a Homo sapiens layer in France’s Mandrin site, which is 25,000 years younger. The study, published in PLOS One, argues that such lightweight projectile technology emerged in Central Asia well before the species’ established presence in Europe, challenging the Eurocentric view of early modern human dispersal.
Genetic work also places the Persian Plateau, near Obi-Rakhmat, as a key population hub during the out-of-Africa expansion, providing a plausible context for technological innovation. The authors suggest that similar micro-points may yet be found across sites linking Central Asia to the western Mediterranean, reshaping models of early human migration.
