Ancient DNA Confirms Distinct Himalayan Pangolin Species, Aiding Anti-Poaching Efforts
Scientists have used DNA from a 190-year-old museum specimen to verify that the Himalayan pangolin is a separate species, Manis aurita, found in Nepal and northern India.
A team of international researchers sequenced DNA from a type specimen collected in 1836, confirming that the Himalayan pangolin constitutes a distinct species called Manis aurita. Modern samples from Nepal and northern India matched the historic DNA, overturning the recent classification as Manis indoburmanica. The findings, appearing in Communications Biology, provide a solid taxonomic basis for identifying which pangolin species are being trafficked.
By applying the new genetic tools to seized scales, authorities can pinpoint poaching hotspots and improve enforcement. The work also highlights the value of museum collections for uncovering hidden biodiversity and guiding reintroduction programs.
